Q : Can geographical indications only be used for agricultural products?
The use of geographical indications (GI) is not limited to agricultural products. They may also highlight qualities of a product which are due to human factors associated with the place of origin of the products, such as specific manufacturing skills and traditions. That place of origin may be a village or town, a region or a country.

Q : Are geographical indications can only be registered as place name?
A geographical indication (GI) can be a geographic place name (e.g., “Napa Valley”) but it may also be a symbol (e.g., a picture of the EiffelTower, the Statue of Liberty, an orange tree), or the outline of a geographic area (e.g., the outline of the state of Floridaor a map of the Dominican Republic), a color, or anything else capable of identifying the source of a good or service.

Q : When I see MADE IN CHINA on a t-shirt, is that a geographical indication?
Probably not, but it really depends. For an indication to function as a geographical indication (GI), there must be a link between somecharacteristic of the good and the particular region where it was produced. That link must inform consumers of someimportant characteristic of the product that is material in their decision to purchase the good.

Not every indication can rise to the level of a geographical indication (GI). In other words, a geographic name itself is not a geographical indication (GI). In order for ageographic name to function as a geographical indication (GI), it must indicate more than just origin; it must communicate that the product from this region has a particular quality or has a particular reputation.

Q : Can all geographical indications be registered?
No, a geographical indication (GI) cannot be registered if:-
Its use is likely to deceive or cause confusion or be contrary to any law;
It comprises or contains scandalous or obscene matter or any matter likely to hurt
  religious susceptibilities of any class or section of the citizens;
It is a generic name;
It has ceased to be protected in their country of origin or which have fallen into
  disuse in that country;
It is falsely represented by persons claiming that goods originate in another territory,
  region or locality as the case may be.

Q : Is there any time limit of geographical indication (GI) protection?
The registration of a geographical indication (GI) shall be for a period of ten years but may be renewed from time to time for an unlimited period by payment of the renewal fees.
